Igual que los famosos paisajes al aire libre de Claude Monet en Giverny, las pinturas recogidas en este libro son consideradas las ms queridas del trabajo de Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) y ejercen de ventana en la búsqueda del pintor español para capturar la esencia de un jardín. Descrito por Monet como el maestro de la luz, Sorolla y sus paisajes, retratos formales y lienzos con temas históricos fueron comparados en numerosas ocasiones con la obra del pintor estadounidense contemporáneo John Singer Sargent. Sorolla haba alcanzado notoriedad en ambos lados del Atlántico por las grandes escenas de la vida española cuando comienza una serie personal de trabajos de jardinera, presentada, por primera vez al completo, en esta publicación. Pintadas en los palacios de La Granja y el Alczar de Sevilla, la Alhambra y el Generalife en Granada, y en la casa del pintor en Madrid (ahora el Museo Sorolla), estas exuberantes y coloridas obras permitieron a Sorolla aplicar a los jardines, flores, esculturas, modelos y elementos arquitectónicos que las encuadran y animan, sus conocimientos de iluminación y sus pinceladas sueltas.
