El artista suizo H. R. Giger (1940-2014) es conocido principalmente por su creación del monstruo espacial de la película de terror futurista Alien, de 1979, con la que ganó un Óscar. En retrospectiva, no fue más que una de las expresiones más célebres del arsenal biomecánico de criaturas de Giger, que fusionaba híbridos de humano y máquina, en poderosas y evocadoras imágenes llenas de oscura psicodelia. Sus obras se inspiraban en fantasmas del pasado, que se remontan a sus miedos de infancia, al tiempo que evocaban mitologías para el futuro. Estas imágenes plasmaron las fantasías y los miedos colectivos de su época: el temor a la bomba nuclear, a la contaminación y el despilfarro de recursos, y a un futuro en el que la supervivencia de nuestros cuerpos esté supeditada a las máquinas.De oníricos paisajes surrealistas creados con una pistola pulverizadora y plantillas a carátulas de discos; de esculturas con forma de guillotina a una cafetería que él mismo diseñó, Giger nos guía personalmente por su polifacética carrera en esta introducción imprescindible sobre este maestro del horror.
