El Genji Monogatari, cima de las letras japonesa y obra maestra universal, nació alrededor del año mil en el refinado y sofisticado mundo de la corte imperial. Su autora concibió un colorido cosmos de relaciones humanas protagonizadas por apuestos príncipes y hermosas damas, que pueblan un escenario de elegantes palacios, suntuosos aposentos y delicados jardines, y definió los ideales morales y estéticos de la cultura japonesa.

A finales del siglo XIX, en un Japón que se modernizaba a marchas forzadas, Ogata Gekko buscó inspiración en el estilo clásico para su serie Cincuenta y cuatro capítulos del Genji. Estas exquisitas estampas publicadas entre 1892 y 1895 ilustran los episodios más célebres de la novela de Murasaki Shikibu y proclaman el indiscutible talento artístico de su autor.
