Después de años de investigación, Robert Descharnes y Gilles Néret localizaron pinturas del maestro que habían permanecido inaccesibles durante largo tiempo; tantas, en realidad, que casi la mitad de las que ilustran el libro apenas se conocen.Más que ofrecer un catálogo razonado, este libro contextualiza la obra de Dalí y sus significados a la luz de documentos contemporáneos, desde escritos y dibujos hasta materiales de otras facetas de su trabajo, como el ballet, el cine, la moda, la publicidad y los objetos de arte. Sin el análisis realizado gracias a ellos, estas pinturas no serían más que una larga serie de imágenes.El estudio se divide en dos partes. La primera examina los inicios de Dalí, cuando era un artista desconocido. Asistimos a cómo el joven Dalí participa de todos los “ismos” (impresionismo, puntillismo, cubismo, fauvismo, purismo y futurismo) con maestría e ingenio, y cómo toma elementos prestados de las tendencias dominantes antes de ridiculizarlas y abandonarlas. La segunda parte desvela los resultados de toda una vida de investigación, así como el gran legado que dejó en obras como La pesca de los atunes (1966/1967) o El toreador alucinógeno (1970). Incluye homenajes inéditos a Velázquez o Miguel Ángel pintados con el mismo propósito que las variaciones sobre maestros del pasado hechas por su contemporáneo, Picasso.Descubrimos cómo, movido por el deseo de desentrañar los secretos de grandes obras y convertirse en un Velázquez de mediados del siglo XX, Dalí se convirtió en Dalí.
