Pocos pintores hay en la historia del arte del siglo tan icónicos, reconocibles y comentados como Edward Hopper. Su obra refleja la extrañeza de nuestro entorno cotidiano y urbano. A pesar de que sus pinturas constituyen ya un tópico visual, hay en su callada belleza mucho silencio que pugna por ser verbalizado. Y ahí es donde Mark Strand ensaya sus variaciones en torno a la obra del maestro norteamericano. Strand, uno de los grandes poetas de nuestro tiempo, nos invita a mirar con él esas escenas desoladas, esos relatos esbozados, esos interiores despojados de nuestra humanidad.

Sus comentarios -organizados en torno a una amplia selección de pinturas- se convierten en verdaderas traducciones del universo plástico de Hopper. Si bien no estamos ante un libro de poemas, es indudable que el trabajo de Strand debe mucho a la poesía y a la forma de mirar que nutre el ejercicio poético. Y a esa labor se le añade en esta edición -ilustrada con las pinturas que originan los textos- la espléndida traducción de Juan Antonio Montiel, capaz de preservar en castellano la minuciosa riqueza de matices y acentos del original inglés.
