Uno de los referentes de la moda de finales del s. XX e inicios del siglo XXI es el británico Alexander McQueen. Sus diseños, evocadores de la época victoriana del siglo XIX, son la perfecta yuxtaposición de elementos contrastantes: la fragilidad y la fuerza; la tradición y la modernidad; la fluidez y la rigidez.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty es el catálogo de la retrospectiva hecha durante la Gala Anual de 2011, organizada por The Costume Institute y The Metropolitan Museum Art, que sirvió como homenaje al diseñador británico, fallecido en 2010. Para tal efecto, se reunieron los más destacados diseños de McQueen como muestra de su talento y versatilidad para plasmar en cada modelo cada una de sus inquietudes, experiencias, referencias y gustos, así como su deleite por los detalles góticos, exóticos y primitivos, que se mimetizan con los cortes más clásicos de la sastrería inglesa, siempre inspirado por la impredecible naturaleza: bella y salvaje a la vez.

Desde pequeño, McQueen se interesó por el diseño de moda. Dejó la escuela a los 16 años integrarse como aprendiz de reconocidos sastres en Savile Row, Inglaterra. Viajó a Milán, fue asistente de otros tantos diseñadores, principalmente japoneses radicados en Londres, y concluyó sus estudios en Diseños de Moda como una promesa de su generación, juntos con John Galianno o Stella McCartney. Su destacado talento para el diseño lo llevó a trabajar para las firmas Givenchy y Gucci.

El libro, con sus espectaculares fotos y su sorprendente portada lenticular, son una muestra de cómo el diseño de moda en ciertos casos pasa de ser una simple frivolidad a toda una declaración de principios y de imaginación, alcanzando altos niveles de calidad estética y artística.
